News Six is a television series created in 1972 by
former NWOET Director Margaret Tucker and is produced in cooperation
with WBGU-PBS. It consists of ten weekly 10-minute programs researched,
written, presented, and co-produced by sixth grade classes from
comprehensive member schools of NWOET.
Through News Six, students experience first-hand how a
television show is put together and learn how stories are
conceptualized, videotaped on location and brought together in the
studio to create the final program. They learn that it takes the
cooperation of many people to produce a successful final product. News
Six also provides a fun and exciting way for students to become better
acquainted with the history, industry and unique people of their
communities.
A field trip to the station allows the entire class to view
the taping and get the first look at their finished program which is
aired several times a few weeks later. Teachers whose sixth grade
classes participate in News Six during the academic year attend a
workshop in September to learn all the steps necessary for the News Six
production.
