Who
are the ancient peoples of Ohio?
Archaeologists have found artifacts and bones that
date ancient people back to 10,000 years ago. These
people were hunters, farmers and craftsmen. The first
prehistoric people to be uncovered in Ohio's history are
the Paleo people. After the Paleo came the Archaic
people, Glacial Kame, Adena's and Hopewell. Later came
the Late Woodland and Fort Ancient. These people left
behind a rich history of the way they lived and the
tools they used. Some were makers of pottery, some
hunters and tool makers. These people lived off of the
land and used what was necessary for survival. They
respected the land and only took from it what was
necessary.
After the Hopewell people disappeared, Ohio wasn't
inhabited by people for about 50 years. The reason is
unknown. After this period, the Iroquois and then more
tribes came to the Ohio region. Following these groups
were the explorers and Europeans. This makes up the
ancient people who lived in Ohio.
