The deep woods of the Black Swamp in Northwest Ohio was an unforgiving place to live in the early 1800’s... full of mosquitoes, giant horseflies, and pools of standing water, all of which made traveling and farming nearly impossible. Some of the early European settlers who came to the swamps found the conditions for living nearly impossible. Many packed up their belongings and left soon after arriving. Many others died early deaths from the hardships that they encountered in this unforgiving environment. But those who were lucky enough to survive came to own some of the richest farmland and oil fields in the United States. The survivors built their homes, settled their families, and with hard work, created lasting communities in Northwest Ohio.
